Cat Lovers vs. Dog Lovers: Recent Research Suggests Cat Lovers May Be More Intelligent

Denise Guastello, an associate professor of Psychology at Carroll University, presented her findings at the annual Association for Psychological Science meeting. She conducted a study on the personality differences between cat people and dog people and found that, in part because of the environments they prefer, cat lovers scored higher on intelligence than dog lovers.

Guastello explained that dog people tend to be more active and energetic, often spending more time outdoors and interacting with others while walking their dogs. Meanwhile, cat people tend to be more introverted and prefer to spend time alone at home. This sensitivity and introversion may explain why cat lovers tend to use their alone time more effectively, such as reading or learning a new language.

It’s worth noting that cats have 300 million neurons, while dogs have approximately half of that number. As Live Science reports, this difference can affect everything from increased visual memory to the ability to survive in the wild.

While dogs are more dependent on their owners and likely to follow their cues, cats have fine-tuned their communication skills with humans over time to persuade their owners to feed them when they’re hungry. They’ve also developed more expressive and sophisticated vocalizations, with the ability to mimic the call of their prey to manipulate an ambush.

Ultimately, though, the choice between being a cat person or a dog person doesn’t reflect intelligence or character. Loving, caring, and showing compassion towards animals is what truly matters, regardless of whether you’re a cat lover or a dog lover.
