8 Ways to Know When Your Pregnancy Begins

Month One: The Journey Begins

Congratulations! You have just embarked on the incredible journey of pregnancy. Although you may not even know it yet, the first month is a crucial period in the development of your little one. During the first two weeks, ovulation takes place, which means there is no baby yet. It is only in the third week that conception occurs.

After fertilization, the egg divides and forms a blastocyst, a ball of cells. This blastocyst then travels from the fallopian tubes to the uterus, where it will implant itself in the uterine lining and become an embryo. The embryo consists of two parts – one will develop into your future baby, and the other will become the placenta, providing vital nutrients to your growing bundle of joy.

At this stage, your baby is no bigger than a poppy seed, measuring about 2 mm long. Your belly will not exhibit any visible changes yet.

Month Two: Signs of Pregnancy

By the second month, you will definitely start experiencing the telltale signs of pregnancy. Nausea, fatigue, frequent urination, and food aversions and cravings may become a regular occurrence. Your baby’s circulatory system begins developing, and major organs like the heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs are starting to form. Tiny arms and legs are also taking shape.

Your baby is now about the size of a raspberry, measuring about half an inch. While you may start noticing some slight changes in your midsection, outsiders are still unable to detect anything.

Month Three: The End of the First Trimester

As you approach the end of the first trimester, pregnancy symptoms are likely to persist. Every woman experiences pregnancy differently, so your symptoms may vary. This month marks a transition from an embryo to a fetus. Your baby’s arms and legs are becoming more mobile, although you won’t feel their movements for another month. You may finally be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat through a Doppler device. Additionally, your baby’s sex organs are developing, although it is still too early to determine the gender.

By the end of month three, your baby will have doubled in size. At around 2.5 to 3 inches long, about the size of a peach, it’s time for your waist to thicken. Pants may start feeling snug, and a tiny bump may begin to form at the bottom of your belly.

Month Four: The Second Trimester Begins

The start of the second trimester brings some relief from the discomforts of early pregnancy. Nausea may subside, you might regain energy, and begin to feel like yourself again, albeit pregnant. Your baby’s hair starts to grow, both on their head and on their body, known as lanugo, a downy fur that helps keep them warm. Your baby is also getting stronger, moving their fingers, toes, and even being able to breathe, suck, and swallow. You may even feel a few kicks.

At this stage, your baby is about the size of your palm, measuring approximately 5 inches. Your belly continues to grow, becoming more pronounced. Some women may decide to share the news as it becomes harder to hide the pregnancy.

Month Five: Rapid Growth

In the fifth month, your baby’s growth becomes even more rapid. They are learning new skills such as yawning and hiccuping, and their unique fingerprint and toe prints are forming. Your baby’s senses are developing, as the amniotic fluid changes in response to your diet. It’s a good time to start incorporating healthy eating habits for the both of you.

Your baby is now around 7 inches long, about the size of a large banana, and weighs over 1 lb. Your belly is noticeably larger, and strangers may comment on your pregnant status. The shape and position of your belly can vary, with some sitting low, high, or somewhere in between. The old wives’ tale about the belly shape determining the baby’s sex has no scientific basis.

Month Six: Growing and Developing

In the sixth month, fat begins to develop on your baby’s body. Their lungs are almost fully developed, allowing them to breathe, and their nostrils open up. They can even practice breathing and hiccuping, which you may feel. Your baby’s face is almost fully formed and their eyes start to open. They are becoming more aware of the world outside the womb and may be startled by bright lights or loud noises.

Your baby has almost doubled in length and weight since last month, measuring approximately 15 inches and weighing around 2 lbs. Your belly continues to round out and become more pronounced. People may accuse you of smuggling a basketball under your shirt.

Month Seven: Third Trimester Begins

Welcome to the third and final trimester! Your baby continues to master new skills in the womb, such as blinking, coughing, and even dreaming during REM sleep. Their brain is rapidly developing, and they are becoming more active, with more noticeable movements.

Your baby is approximately 18 inches long and weighs around 3 lbs. Your belly is growing, and your uterus is about the size of a basketball. The end of the journey is drawing near, and your baby will soon reach their actual length and weight at birth.

Month Eight: Preparing for Birth

In the eighth month, your baby is preparing for their grand entrance into the world. They are fine-tuning the skills they will need, such as swallowing, breathing, kicking, and sucking. Their skin is no longer see-through and becomes opaque. Your baby is building up antibodies and developing their immune system. They settle into a heads-down position, making delivery easier for you.

As you progress through the eighth month, your baby is approaching their final length and weight. Your belly is more prominent than ever. Your baby’s arrival is just around the corner, and the anticipation grows.
