Green Tea and Its Impact on Cognitive Learning Abilities
Green tea is a widely acknowledged and popular health drink. It has been associated with a host of health benefits, including improved brain function. The study was carried out by Abdul Haque, from Shimane University Faculty of Medicine. Haque studied the cognitive learning ability of rats through radial maze. The study aimed to determine the impact of green tea extracts in the form of Mitsui Norin’s commercial Polyphenon E (PE) on the learning abilities of these rats.
The concentration of catechins in green tea, including EGCG (63%), epicatechin (EC) (11%), epigallocatechin (EGC) (6%), and epicatechin gallate (ECG) (6%), were classified in the study.
The study provided evidence that green tea extracts significantly improved the cognitive learning abilities of the rats. The rats were divided into two groups, one group was administered with PE while the other group served as a control.
The results showed that the rats administered with PE exhibited significant improvements in their reference and working memory-related abilities compared to the control group. The researchers also found that green tea extracts had an impact on the neural stem cells and the growth of new neurons in the hippocampus, which plays a crucial role in short and long-term memory.
The study shows that green tea extracts can help improve cognitive learning abilities, including working memory and reference memory. The cognitive benefits of green tea are believed to be due to the presence of polyphenols and antioxidants, which protect the brain from oxidative stress and improve neural function.
